PRAGMATICS
PRAGMATICS A. DEFINITION OF PRAGMATICS & ACCORDING TO EXPERTS Pragmatics dates back to philosophical thinking of the early 19th century and was introduced by the American philosopher Charles W. Morris (1901-1979) as one of the three components of semiotics, the science of signs. Specifically, Morris defined pragmatics as “the study of the relation of signs to interpreters” (1938, p. 6). In modern linguistics, pragmatics is broadly defined as the study of language use in context. See definitions below. Pragmatics can be analyzed from two perspectives, the Cognitive-Philosophical view (or Anglo-American pragmatics) and the Sociocultural-Interactional view (or European-Continental pragmatics) (Haugh, 2008; Huang, 2007). The first is referred to as the ‘component view,’ and it examines the ‘systematic study of meaning by virtue of, or dependent on, the use of language’ (p. 341). I want to ask, what is the sound system in Indonesian the same as the sound system in English? thank you
ReplyDeleteOk thanks you to question Riska. Your question is good.
DeleteI will answer your question..
Sounds system in Indonesia not same with sounds system in English.
Because I think In English sound system, there are many styles of speech for each individual which is influenced by a variety of causes such as locality, early influences, and social surroundings. The pronunciation of English involves the production of individual or isolated sounds and the utterance of words, phrases, and sentences with correct spelling and stressing and/or rhytm intonation.
Basically, comparing with the English sound system, Indonesian sound system is similar to the English sound system. They are similar in some terms, namely, minimal pairs, similutude, assimilation, elision, and intonation. However, some differences also exist. Some English vowels and consonants do not exist in Indonesian. Indonesian also do not have clusters, stress, and aspirated sounds.
Problems faced by the Indonesians learning English are concerned with the ear, the matter of making foreign sounds, the distribution of the sounds, certain attributes about sounds, fluency, and the relation between pronunciation and conventional spelling. Therefore, they should overcome the problems by deeply understanding the theory of phonology and practicing to pronounce the words correctly.
